Survey
1:
Wuzhen contains rich historical and cultural flavors,
because it boasts the most venerated history and
most fertile cultures. |

Rice
Wine Workshop:
Gongsheng's "San Bai Wine"
|
The final procedure of making wine
|
Wuzhen's rice wine is called "San Bai Wine"
(which in Chinese means "three white wine"
). In the old time, almost every local family made
this wine. "Three white" means that the
wine is made from white glutinous rice, white "flour"
(distiller's yeast) and "white" (clean)
water. The process of making the wine is the following:
steam the glutinous rice to be well cooked, pour
cold water on the rice to cool it down. Smashed
the distiller's yeast and mix it evenly with the
steamed rice. Put the mixed rice into wine jar,
press flat, make a small "pond" in the
middle of the rice and seal the jar, use straw or
batting to cover the jar so as to preserve the temperate
in the jar. After four to five days, uncover the
wine jar and examine the rice. If the "pond"
in the middle of the rice is filled with wine, that
means the rice has been fully fermented. Pour cold
water in the jar till the rice is fully covered
by water, seal the jar again. One week later, uncover
the jar, remove the rice material and distil it
till the wine is done. In the modern times, people
seldom see such a traditional way of making wine.
In the Gongsheng Wine Shop, you can not only have
a chance to drink the pure "San Bai WIne",
but also watch the process of making the wine. |

Dyeing
Workshop:
Weave the cloth
|
Dye with natural dyestuff
|
Sun-dry the cloth
|
The process of making blue print cotton is not very
complicated. But simple arts require power of insight
and artistic inspirations. The slight differences
among blue print works can only be told by people
who has engaged in this line for a long time.
In Wuzhen's blue print cotton dyeing workshop, there
are clothes, kerchiefs, handbags, fans and toys
made of blue print cotton.
Neighboring the blue print cotton dyeing workshop,
there is a spinning and cloth weaving workshop.
Visiting the two workshops at one time, you may
have a clearer idea on how the blue print cotton
cloth is made and how the delicate patterns are
printed on the cloth. |
|
Cloth
Shoes Workshop:
Many city dwellers may have not seen the cloth shoes
for ages. City dwellers now like to wear leather
shoes. But wearing leather shoes are not as comfortable
as wearing cloth shoes. Now many families prepare
some cloth shoes. When taking rest at home, people
will wear the cloth shoe to "free" their
feet. Unlike other cloth shoes, Wuzhen's cloth shoes
are high-quality products with excellent workmanship.
After visiting and watching the process of making
cloth shoes, you'd better buy a pair of shoes for
yourself, and you won't feel regret about your choice. |
|
Cookie
and Cake Shop:
The most famous cookie in Wuzhen is so-called "sisters'
cake". The production of this cake has a history
of over 200 years. In the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911)
during the Qianlong Period, local scholars had recorded
the making of "sister cake". Tourists
can taste the "sister cake" while watching
the process of making cakes. |
|
Tobacco
Workshop:
Tobacco Leaves
|
Shaving Tobacco Leaves
|
Cut Tobacco
|
Wuzhen's dried red tobacco was widely known. Its
cut tobacco is shaved from fresh tobacco leaves.
After sun-dried, the cut tobacco turns to be in
bright red color with heavy fragrance. Local people
use a set of traditional tools (including planer
tools) to make the cut tobacco. With time goes by,
very few smokers now use dried red tobacco. But
the process of making cut tobacco is still very
interesting and worth watching.
In the tobacco workshop, a complete set of tobacco-processing
tools are still well preserved and there are people
performing the work for tourists. If you're interested,
you can participate in the process of making cut
tobacco. |
|
Rattan Article Workshop, Bamboo
Product Workshop and Hooper's Shop:
The three workshops are in the same building, which
produce housekeeping utensils and furniture. If
you have enough time, you can ask the workshop to
make a small artware for you. You may just wait
for a while and a favorite handicraft will be done
for you. |
