Qingming Jie (Jie means Festival) :
(Clear and Bright Festival)
Anecdotes About Qing Ming
Qing Ming has been one of the most popular
festivities in China for thousands of years.
People on that day go and pay respects to
forebears at their tombs and go for outings.
It is a day shortly after winter is over,
a day in early spring, the season in which
vegetation begins.
Qing Ming Festival is also known as Hanshi
Jie, or the Day of Eating Things Cold. During
the Spring and Autumn Period some two thousand
years ago, Chong Er, son of Duke Xian of
the State of Jin, was forced to live in
exile in a foreign land for nineteen years.

of his followers could not withstand the hardships
any more and left him in the lurch. Only Jie Zitui
and five or six others stuck to him loyally. When
Chong Er wished to have some meat, which was not
available, Jie stealthily cut off some flesh from
his own arm and cooked it for him to eat. Later,
Chong Er became Duke Wen of the State of Jin with
the help of Duke Mu of the State of Qin. To reward
those who followed him throughout the exile according
to their merits, he granted them titles and fiefs.
Jie Zitui, however, after consulting with his mother,
decided not to seek wealth and position but to live
a secluded life in a mountain---Mianshan. Chong
Er went personally to look for him but for several
days running he could not find the mother and son.
He knew Jie loved his mother dearly, calculating
Jie would come out with his mother if he set the
mountain on fire. But Jie would rather die than
accept a reward for his meritorious deeds of the
past. For three days and nights, the fire kept burning
and finally reduced the whole place to ashes. Both
Jie and his mother were found to have been burnt
to death, their arms clinging to a scorched willow
tree. Chong Er felt very sad and Jie and his mother
buried in the mountain, where a shrine was erected,
and renamed the mountain after him in his memory.
To remember forever Jie's loyalty for him, Chong
Er had the scorched willow tree felled and brought
back to make a pair of wooden shoes. Every day he
would sigh at the shoes and lament:Ħħ Alas, the feet
under!" Henceforth, in correspondence with
a trusted friend, people in China like to begin
a letter with "to so and so the feet under"
as the salutation.
The day Duke Wen of Jin set fire on Mianshan
happened to be the Qing Ming Festival. To pay
him respects and in appreciation of the sterling
quality of Jie Zitui, who would rather be burnt
to death than be given a fief, people on that
day put out their kitchen fire and eat cold things
prepared beforehand. In time, this has become
an accepted custom. This is also the day for people
to sweep clean the tombs of their ancestors and
mourn the dead.
